In times of natural disaster, the QTU is there to support members

As Queenslanders, we are used to the trauma and loss associated with natural disasters. Cyclones, floods and bush fires regularly impact large parts of our great state. That is why, back in the early 1980s, your Union established a Natural Disaster Relief Fund.

As a result, after cyclone Debbie hit the Whitsunday coast, followed by the associated serious weather event that covered a large part of the state, your Union was able to provide financial assistance to 184 members who were directly impacted, with a total grant amount of $144,900. It is something that all members should be proud of that such support is available so quickly.

Members who are financial at the time of a natural disaster and are directly impacted are eligible to apply for grant of up to a maximum of $1,000. This can be of great assistance when faced with the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster.

The fund was established in line with QTU policy and reserves are set aside each year as part of the Union’s budget process. It is designed to provide emergency relief from the distress and property loss associated with the impact of a natural disaster. It is something the Union can provide members in a time of great distress, although it is important to remember that it is not designed to replace home and/or contents insurance.

Cyclone Debbie was not the first natural disaster to impact on the lives of QTU members and it will not be the last. But members can be assured that, when faced with the immediate emotional and financial distress of such events, the QTU will be there to provide direct financial support.

What QTU members said

“It was fantastic to know that support was available from the Union after Cyclone Debbie devastated our area. Everyone was affected in various ways and it brought relief to know that $1,000 was available and easy to apply for online. It took a few minutes to complete and the funds were processed and in my bank account within two days. Thanks a million.”
